How to protect your family photos

Simple steps so you are not tied to one phone: backups, access from another device, and what to do if the phone is lost or broken.

If every photo lives only on the phone, theft, a drop, or a handset upgrade can put them out of reach. A copy somewhere else (and the habit of updating it) is the simplest protection.

1. Choose what to protect first

Start with what you cannot replace: family, children, trips, scanned documents. You do not need a thousand folders on day one. One clear album already lowers the risk.

2. Copy that set fully

Upload it to a cloud service or an external drive you control. Note the copy date. If you use the cloud, also sign in from a computer to confirm you see the same photos.

3. Decide who can see what

Family photos do not need to be public. Keep folders private by default. If you share an album, use limited permissions and review links now and then.

4. Plan for a broken phone

Try once: can you open the photos without that handset? If yes, you are protected. If not, the copy is not ready yet.

5. Keep the habit

Each month (or after a trip), upload new photos. Short uploads fail less often than one huge migration when the phone is already full or broken.
