How to move from Google Drive without losing files
A clear plan to list what matters, download or move folders, and verify access before you leave Drive.
Leaving Google Drive does not have to be a blind jump. A short inventory, verified copies, and a period where both places coexist lowers the risk of losing something.
1. List what you actually use
Open Drive and note active folders: work, photos, legal documents, shared with others. Ignore old clutter for now; you can move it later.
2. Download or copy in blocks
Do not try “everything at once” on a Sunday night. Copy folder by folder (or use Google Takeout if it fits). Mark each block “copied” when it finishes.
3. Upload to the new home and check
In the new service, recreate a simple structure (for example Documents, Photos, Shared). Open several random files. If something is missing, redo only that block.
4. Update links and sharing
Tell people who still have old links. Create new permissions at the destination. Meanwhile you can leave Drive read-only for a few days.
5. Close Drive when you are sure
After you have worked only in the new place for a while, empty or archive Drive. Keep a final export on a disk if you want a cold copy.
If any step feels overwhelming, ask a human for help: migration rewards patience, not haste.
