Day 18 - Brand without a soul: KM0 style review
A professional meetup meant to cover KM0 brand and style: we wandered, but one point stuck - the brand then had no soul and needed a full revision.
We held a professional meetup with the explicit intent to talk about styles and brand for Kilometer 0 Digital. We started there and, as tables do, wandered into other topics. One conclusion did not wash away: the brand we had then had no soul. Colours, type, logo, visual tone, and the rest of the system needed a full revision, not a favicon polish.
Intent versus what happened
- Plan: review visual identity and style rules so Cloud, Email, and the marketing site say the same thing.
- Reality: the talk jumped to product, community, and ops.
- Anchor that stayed: without a soul in the brand, the rest of the pitch (local, EU, public price) sounded like a generic template.
We do not invent a street or clock time here: the diagnosis and the revision agenda are what matter.
What “no soul” meant here
It was not empty aesthetic snark. At the table it meant:
- Recognisable but empty: it looked like “a tech site”, not Kilometer 0.
- Borrowed tokens: gradients, type, and gestures that could belong to any SaaS.
- Logo without character: the mark did not say origin, nearness, or civic infrastructure.
- Surface mismatch: marketing, login, and product did not share the same visual temperature.
If you remove the nav and the page could still be another brand, branding has failed. That was the informal test we used.
Revision agenda (what the table asked for)
A full revision, not a tweak:
- Brand direction: cool civic / local editorial vibe, not a Tailwind demo.
- Colour: one anchor + one accent; drop rainbow / fashion-purple chains.
- Type: display + body + UI with character (not Inter as the only voice).
- Logo / favicon: a system that reads at 16px; one idea, not stacked metaphors.
- Page styles: section rhythm, buttons, auth forms; one family across web and sibling surfaces.
- Anti-generic rules: document what is banned so agents and humans do not drift back to the average.
Some of that work has already shipped later on the public site (tokens, KM0 K0 lettermark, anti-slop doctrine). This day records the moment we decided, not the full technical changelog.
Useful digressions (no fake perfect minutes)
Side topics appeared (product, meetups, priorities). No need to pretend it was a three-hour branding workshop. Do record that, through the noise, the brand was diagnosed and prioritised.
Close
Meetup intent, “no soul” diagnosis, and the revision list: that is what this day leaves on the page. Day 17 closed Palantir/Harari at the Casino; this day opens the identity thread.
Next step for readers: look at the live site (home, pricing) against what existed then, or come to the next meetup.
